چکیده

We consider a large trader seeking to liquidate a portfolio using both a transparent trading venue and a dark pool. Our model captures the price impact of trading in transparent traditional venues as well as the execution uncertainty of trading in a dark pool. The unique optimal execution strategy uses both venues continuously. The order size in the dark pool can overor underrepresent the portfolio size depending on adverse selection and the correlation structure of the assets in the portfolio. Introduction a dark pool results in delayed trading at the traditional venue. The appeal of the dark pool is increased by liquidity but reduced by adverse selection. By pushing up prices at the traditional venue and parallel selling in the dark pool, a trader might generate profits; we provide sufficient conditions to rule out such profitable price manipulation strategies.

Portfolio liquidation in dark pools in continuous time∗

We consider an illiquid financial market where a risk-averse investor has to liquidate a large portfolio within a finite time horizon [0, T ] and can trade continuously at a traditional exchange (the “primary venue”) and in a dark pool. At the primary venue, trading yields a linear price impact. In the dark pool, no price impact costs arise but order execution is uncertain, modeled by a multi-d...

An explicit solution of a non-linear quadratic constrained stochastic control problem with an application to optimal liquidation in dark pools with adverse selection∗

We study a constrained stochastic control problem with jumps; the jump times of the controlled process are given by a Poisson process. The cost functional comprises quadratic components for an absolutely continuous control and the controlled process and an absolute value component for the control of the jump size of the process. We characterize the value function by a “polynomial” of degree two...

Optimal Liquidation of a Call Spread

We study the optimal liquidation strategy for a call spread in the case when the market uses an over-estimated volatility to price options. The problem is formulated as an optimal stopping problem, which we solve explicitly.

Optimal Execution under Time-Inhomogeneous Price Impact and Volatility

We consider the problem of optimally liquidating a large position in a security within a specified period of time, to maximize a weighted sum of the expected value and variance of the profit from liquidating the position. To exploit predictable seasonal components in liquidity and volatility, we incorporate time-inhomogeneous linear price impact slopes and volatility into the formulation. We sh...

Default and liquidation timing under asymmetric information

We consider a dynamic model in which shareholders delegate a manager, who observes private information about running and liquidation costs of the firm, to operate the firm. We analytically derive the shareholders’ optimal contract contingent on the cost structure of the firm. The information asymmetries change the high-cost firm’s default and liquidation timing. Even if the liquidation value is...
